Washington parents who are in the middle of a separation or divorce understand the unique challenges that children and divorce can bring. Not only is divorce an individually emotional and difficult time period, but there must also be thorough consideration on behalf of your children. Divorce proceedings between couples with children can be very different from a couple without.
Recently, reality television star and businesswoman Bethenny Frankel announced she and husband were separating after a little more than two years of marriage. The couple has one child, who is two-years-old. Frankel stated that while the couple love and respect each other, they are dedicated to continual care for their young daughter who will remain their first priority.
While divorce can be a painful and unpleasant process, dissolution proceedings can also represent a critical juncture for the upbringing of children. With divorce rates nearing half of all marriages, many children are affected by divorce. During a divorce, the perceived lack of stability may negatively impact a young child and therefore divorce can be a very uncertain and frightening time for children.
It is critical to consider a child's best interests, as well as continually be aware of their emotions. If possible, parents should attempt to keep custody arrangements and negotiations limited and brief. For most children, creating routine will help to cement stability and give the child something solid during a time of change.
If an amicable decision cannot be reached, a court can help sort out a parenting plan. When involved, a court will look into the best interests of the child. This includes evaluating the child's age, wishes, the parent's health and many details regarding the upbringing of the child.. While it may be difficult to do, it is important for spouses to maintain civility throughout proceedings.
Divorce can be one of the most challenging times of a person's life. With divorce brings change and a new way of life. Divorcing with children can make the dissolution process much more complicated and sensitive.
